Save Our Sisters

Our Story

Video by John O'Boyle/Gabriel Gluck of the Star Ledger

Dragon Boating is an ancient Chinese ritual, whereby paddlers, in a synchronized rhythm, race competitively, as they believe that racing “symbolized their struggle with nature and the fight against deadly enemies.” With their “‘dragon’ at the helm, they would gain strength and vitality and avert misfortune.” This symbolism resonates with many breast cancer survivors who have formed teams all over the world.

Our boats are 40 feet long and hold 20 paddlers sitting in ten rows two across, facing forward. A steerer stands in the stern and during races a drummer sits in the bow. At competitive events, ceremonial dragon heads and tails are attached to the boats.

In 1996, Dr. Don McKenzie, MD, PhD, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia, believed that by following a special exercise and training program, such as Dragon Boating, Breast Cancer survivors could avoid lymph-edema and enjoy active full lives. His program was carefully monitored by a team of physicians, a physiotherapist and a nurse. Dr McKenzie's theory was proven correct. No new cases of lymph-edema occurred and none of the existing cases became worse.

Pathways Team SOS-NJ - Save Our Sisters is a group of breast cancer survivors and supporters who are committed to the fight against cancer and the goal of providing opportunities for women to share in experiences which lead to personal growth and healing.

Members range in age from the mid 20's to mid 70's and come from all over Northern and Central New Jersey. Some have joined our team while still undergoing chemo and radiation therapy and some are long term survivors.

Our team practices on Lake Parsippany and we are coached by Ellen Law, who is a U.S. National Team member. Founded in 2008, Pathways Team SOS-NJ is an affiliate of the NJ Dragon Boat Club. We are now one of the 50+ survivor teams across the United States and one of 4 such teams in New Jersey.

We are a "floating support group" that offers encouragement and inspiration to one another as we enjoy the camaraderie of our team.

Pathways Team SOS-NJ is open to women of all fitness levels, from the “novice exerciser” to the “most buff ”. As with any fitness program, before joining our team, check with your doctor to determine whether Dragon Boating is recommended for you. No experience is required!!!
